Comics startup Diwata Komiks is launching “Carmina: A Filipino-American Urban Mythology”, the first Filipino-American comic series that focuses on Philippine mythology and folklore to enthrall readers around the globe.

The new comic series, which officially debuts in October 2021, tells the story of Carmina, a troubled biracial young woman living in a New Mexico trailer park who discovers that she’s part Diwata (mythical beings in indigenous Philippine folk religions) and the daughter of a powerful goddess.

Created by Emmy-winning filmmaker and writer Mark A.J. Nazal with community advocate and producer Joe Arciaga, actress, writer, and producer Erica Juliet, and award-winning Filipino comics artist Roland Amago, Diwata Komiks hopes to bring stories of Philippine mythology and introduce a new world of gods and monsters to a wider audience.

“We believe there is a space for these stories today with an ever-growing population of Filipino-Americans looking to see ourselves represented in our own narratives and a new generation of international readers looking for new sources of lore,” Director of Community Engagement Joe Arciaga shared.

Diwata Komiks debuts Carmina’s story this October on Filipino-American history month with “Carmina #1: Beginnings” now on presale. It will officially launch physical and online sales on October 30, 2021.

The comic series’ launch will be held at the Philippine Expressions Bookshop in partnership with cultural organizations FilAm Arts and The Filipino-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Los Angeles.

Netflix’s new anime, Trese, based on the award-winning graphic novel of the same title, introduced Philippine folklore and debuted on the streaming platform with an all-Filipino voice cast.
