Cebu, Mindanao state universities open medicine programs to scholars

Cebu Normal University-Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (CNU-VSMMC) and Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) have been granted permission to offer the doctor of medicine program beginning schoolyear 2021-2022.

Cebu Normal University-Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (CNU-VSMMC) and Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) will start offering doctor of medicine programs in the next school year after receiving approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The CNU-VSMMC and WMSU join eight state universities offering doctor of medicine programs, including the University of Northern Philippines, Mariano Marcos State University, Cagayan State University, Bicol University, West Visayas State University, University of the Philippines Manila School of Health Sciences in Leyte, Mindanao State University, University of the Philippines-Manila.

The CHED said in a statement on May 12, 2021, that granting approval to the state universities is part of its program to address the shortage of doctors in the country.

“In support of these landmark laws, CHED is aggressively assisting top SUCs to develop doctor of medicine programs to address the shortage of doctors across regions of the country,” said CHED Chair Prospero de Vera III.

Medical students of state universities and colleges (SUC) are given full tuition subsidy through the Cash Grants to Medical Students Enrolled in State Universities and Colleges (CGMS-SUCs) program of the CHED.

The Philippines’ Doktor Para Sa Bayan program gives scholarships to Filipino medical students with the condition that the graduates will work as doctors in the country for the same number of years they were scholars.

CHED said the Cebu Normal University will follow the curriculum that combines Cuban and Canadian models that balance clinical and population/community-based practice. CNU-VSMMC College of Medicine is set to open in the First Semester of SY 2021-2022.

The WMSU will follow a holistic and integrated learning approach that combines a problem-based integrated system approach and research-based and values-driven education.

The University of the Philippines was ranked among the World’s Best Universities for Medicine as its graduates led the new medicine board passers of 2020.
