Filipino visual artist Bricx Martillo “ShrimpPaste” Dumas has won first place in the global DigitalArt4Climate competition at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland with his artwork, “Nexus”.

Dumas, the only finalist from the Philippines and Southeast Asia out of 30 creations selected from 208 artworks from 58 countries was named the first prize winner on November 14, 2021.

The 30-year-old artist’s winning artwork, “Nexus”, shows a hand holding a blue-colored drink in a plastic bag with a straw and a cigarette whose smoke evaporates into tiny leaves.

The digital artist and eco-activist based in Quezon City, Manila, emphasized the importance of taking action during the climate crisis in a message shared by DigitalArt4Climate.

“Joining this competition was not only a chance to represent my country but also to champion our call for climate action that art is a powerful tool to make current issues and problems easier to understand by everyone,” Bricx Martillo Dumas said.

“My artwork, entitled “Nexus”, is a visual representation of how our simple everyday lifestyle affects our environment, ecosystem, and how we struggle to live,” Dumas adds.

“This competition may come to an end, but our fight for climate justice is far from over as this is just the beginning,” Dumas continued.

“Eight years ago, my hometown suffered from the wrath of typhoon Haiyan. It changed my life forever. Should we wait for another typhoon stronger than Haiyan just to realize that this world is suffering from mass extinction, or should we be the change that this world needs? Our time is now.”

The winners were determined through online public voting. Dumas received the first prize of 1,500 euros. The 2nd place winners were from Iran, France, the United States, and Kenya.

The DigitalArt4Climate Art Competition, organized by IAAI GloCha in collaboration with the UN-Habitat youth programme, is a nonfungible token (NFT) art initiative that aimed to inspire and promote climate action through the power of culture and technology and empower the uptake of digital innovation by the creative community in an accessible and meaningful way.

Five Filipino artists have released free new comics in the international comic book anthology project “Ten Years to Save the World” which calls for climate action and saving the planet.

The Philippines’ Liter of Light, led by its founder Illac Diaz, represented the country during the UN COP26 summit co-hosted by Italy and Scotland in November and was also awarded the Green Award for Energy in London.
