Yale University Filipina graduate student Joan Danielle Ongchoco has been awarded the William James Prize by the Society for Philosophy and Psychology (SPP) in the United States.

Ongchoco was recognized for her work “Figments of imagination: Scaffolded attention creates non-sensory object and event representations” during the SPP’s 47th annual meeting which concluded on July 2, 2021.

Ongchoco’s research revolves around “scaffolded attention,” a new phenomenon inspired by how a grid of squares serves as the scaffold or raw material for imagination. Her recent works involve event segmentation, enumeration, musical sequences, and visual working memory.

Prior to pursuing her graduate studies, Joan Ongchoco was part of the inaugural graduating class of 2017 at Yale-NUS College in Singapore, where she graduated summa cum laude.

The Filipina is expected to complete her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology at Yale University next year.

The prestigious William James Prize honors a graduate student with the best-contributed paper and award recipients are chosen by an ad hoc committee appointed by the president in consultation with the executive committee.

The Society for Philosophy and Psychology is the premier scientific and educational organization for philosophically interested psychologists and psychologically interested philosophers in North America.

Outstanding Filipino graduate students who are making their mark abroad include University of the Philippines Los Baños alumnus Albert Remus Rosana who won the Dorothy J. Killam Memorial Graduate Prize at the University of Alberta (UA) and UP historian Dr. Ros Costelo who received the highest academic honors in Spain.
