Filipino students from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS)-Main Campus and the Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science (ValMaSci) have bagged three bronze medals at the recently concluded 33rd International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Singapore.

Members of the Philippine national delegation Vincent Dela Cruz, Raphael Dylan Dalida, and Frederick Ivan Tan earned medals in the most prestigious computer science competition for secondary school students held online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic from June 19 to 25, 2021.

Dela Cruz, Dalida, and Tan bested fellow exceptional high school students from over 80 countries in the computing tilt.

Dela Cruz, a 12th-grader at the Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science, scored the highest from the Philippine contingent at 92nd place out of 351 competitors.

Philippine Science High School-Main Campus 11th-grade pupil Dalida was at 119th place. Dalida also won a bronze in the 2019 edition of the Singapore Olympiad.

PSHS Main’s other medalist Tan was at 136th place.

Dalida won a bronze medal while Dela Cruz was given an honorable mention at the 2020 Online International Math Olympiad.

“The IOI is a proving ground for some of the brightest upcoming minds who are in the best position to solve the world’s problems,” said Marte Soliza, president of the National Olympiad in Informatics – Philippines (NOI.PH) which organized the Philippine team in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

“Apart from coding skills, contestants also need to think on their feet and find solutions to anything that’s thrown at them,” adds Soliza.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is one of several international science Olympiads held annually around the world. Exceptional high school students from various countries compete in the prestigious algorithmic competition to sharpen their informatics skills, such as problem analysis, design of algorithms and data structures, programming, and testing.
