Swimmer Ernie Gawilan officially earns ticket to Tokyo Paralympics with Berlin bronze
Filipino swimmer Ernie Gawilan has formalized his entry to the Tokyo Summer Paralympic Games after bagging the bronze medal in the Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaften (IDM) Berlin Para Swimming World Series in Berlin, Germany.
Gawilan placed third in the men’s S7 400m freestyle event with a registered time of 5 minutes and 3.74 seconds on June 20, 2021.
The Davao native para-athlete officially qualified to the Tokyo Paralympics after completing his review classification race in the same event.
He saw action as an S7 athlete, defined by The International Paralympic Committee as para-swimmers with “one leg and one arm amputation on opposite sides, or a paralysis of one arm and one leg on the same side.”
Ernie Gawilan, one of the most decorated para-athletes in the Philippines, is a 2016 Rio Paralympian, a triple Gold medalist at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia, and the 2019 World Para Swimming Silver medalist in London.
The bemedalled para-swimmer earlier revealed in media interviews that he has been invited to serve as torch bearer at the opening of the quadrennial games.
Joining Gawilan in Tokyo is Filipino para-taekwondo bet Allain Ganapin, who also qualified for the Summer Paralympics according to the Philippine Sports Commission.
