Vanessa Sarno debuts as Philippines’ new champion in Asian Weightlifting

Vanessa Sarno has debuted as the Philippines’ new champion athlete in the Asian Weightlifting Federation tournament held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The teen weightlifter from Tagbilaran City in Bohol was declared the day’s champion in her Asian Weightlifting Championships debut on April 21, 2021.

The 17-year-old Filipino champion finished on top of the podium of the women’s 71-kilogram division after lifting a total of 229 kg (101+128) from two gold-winning performances in the clean & jerk and Total.

On her way to her gold podium finish, Sarno completed all her six lifts: 93, 97, 101 kg in the snatch and 120, 124, 128kg in the clean and jerk.

Vanessa Sarno lifted 229kg (101+128) with 2 gold-winning performances in C&J and Total.

Bohol’s pride snagged 3 weightlifting golds in the 2020 International Weightlifting Federation Online Youth World Cup organized by Lima, Peru. She also bagged 2 gold medals for the Philippines at the 2019 Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships in North Korea.

The Philippines’ star weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz secured her Tokyo Olympics berth after her strong finish also at the 2021 Asian Weightlifting Championships.
