Lovi Poe, Allen Dizon score major acting awards at Manhattan Film Festival
Filipino actors Lovi Poe and Allen Dizon have brought pride to the country after winning the major acting awards at the 10th International Film Festival Manhattan (IFFM) in New York, U.S.A.
The film festival that went digital this year due to the pandemic situation and screened films online from November 19 to 22, 2020, hailed Poe and Dizon as winners of Best Actress and Best Actors awards, respectively, for their stellar performance in their 2019 movie Latay (The Battered Husband).
Lovi Poe herself belatedly echoed the good news on December 3 on her social media after learning that she and her film bagged the festival’s prestigious awards.
“[L]ove making films especially films with themes that are hard to talk about, with characters that are rarely seen on screen,” the award-winning actress said on her post on Instagram.
“I have never portrayed the role of a violent wife to a battered husband,” she continued. “To say it was challenging is an understatement. I am fond of taking on off beat roles and doing projects like this that raises awareness about domestic violence, particularly towards men, which isn’t documented as much.”
The Kapuso actress also thanked their film director, Ralston Jover, and shared her victory with her co-star Allen Dizon, winner of the Best Actor award.
“Thank you to our director Ralston Jover for giving me your full trust in playing a very unconventional character opposite to Allen Dizon. He is a very talented and expressive actor and it is truly an honor to be sharing the screen with you. We did it, @allentdizon!”
“As I type this, I just finished rewatching the trailer of this memorable project — LATAY. Thank you Cinema Bravo and the International Film Festival Manhattan,” Lovi concluded.
The Pinoy indie film that tells the story of a husband who suffers domestic violence from his ill-tempered wife also bagged the Best Narrative Feature Global Award.
Just this September, the film Latay won the Gold Award for a Feature Film at the Wallachia International Film Festival (WIFF) in Romania.
This year the IFFM organized by the team of Filipino-American Luis Pedron screened 22 Filipino films along with the world’s best films in the New York-based festival that champions diversity in films.
The IFFM 2020 also benefited the victims of typhoons Rolly and Ulysses in the Philippines from its ticket sales.
The film festival also honored the multi-awarded Filipino filmmaker Louie Ignacio with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
