The Philippines’ taekwondo champion Kurt Barbosa has become the ninth Filipino national athlete to secure a Tokyo Olympics berth after beating his opponent in the 2021 Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Amman, Jordan.

Barbosa claimed his spot in the Tokyo Olympics with a dramatic win in the men’s -58kg division, defeating hometown bet Jordanian Zaid Al-Halawani, 50-49, on May 22, 2021.

The Filipino national athlete earlier advanced to the semifinals after conquering a match with Mongolia’s Molomyn Tumenbayar, 40-33.

The National University student-athlete, gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Taekwondo Open Championships, is the first Filipino male jin to qualify for the Olympics in thirteen years.

Kurt Barbosa will join fellow Olympians pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and rower Cris Nievarez in the Summer Olympic Games scheduled in Tokyo this year.
