Rescued Philippine eagle released back to wilderness on Earth Day

Tagyaman Fernando, rescued from a trap in October 2020, has been returned to his forest home on April 22, 2021.

A rescued Philippine eagle has been released back to the wilderness by the Philippine Eagle Foundation on Earth Day 2021.

“Tagyaman Fernando” was accidentally caught in a native trap at the Pantaron mountains of San Fernando in Bukidnon last October 2020.

The starving immature eagle weighed 3.9 kgs and was assessed to have no serious injuries although an x-ray showed an air gun pellet lodged at the right wing of the bird.

The successful rehabilitation took a few months and Tagyaman Fernando was finally released back to his forest home on Earth Day, April 22.

“There he goes! Tagyaman Fernando is finally back home. It’s a happy Earth Day indeed. 💚🌏,” posted the Philippine Eagle Foundation social media.

The group thanked its conservation partners and donors who support the release and monitoring of the rescued critically endangered eagle of the Philippines.

Philippine Eagle Makilala Hiraya safely returned to her home forest in July 2020 while a pair of Philippine Eagles were secured in Singapore’s conservation bird park in 2019.
