The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) has signed a resolution to partner with the Iloilo government in the implementation of strategies for flood risk reduction and resilience in the province.

UPV’s newly installed Chancellor Clement C. Camposano, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., and Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas signed the resolution after the Flood Resiliency Summit held at the UPV Little Theater on December 17, 2020.

The summit was held after a four-day webinar series that had experts and various stakeholders discuss the flooding risks faced by Iloilo and the necessary policies to help the province cope with floods brought on by typhoons.

The resolution addressed the situation of the five major river systems in Iloilo, namely, Jalaur, Suage, Tigum, Aganan, and the Sibalom River Systems, and the impact of rising waters.

The signed resolution called for the completion of the Comprehensive Masterplan for Iloilo City and the Iloilo River Flood Control Project, as well as a comprehensive study on the river systems and their effects on flooding, and the restoration and conservation of watersheds.

The partnership also involves the institutionalization of standard operating procedures in response to flooding occurrences.

The UP Visayas community has also been involved in various innovative solutions addressing the coronavirus pandemic, including the development of alcohol from sugar byproduct to donate to hospitals and frontliners and students stranded in lockdown volunteering to make improvised face shields for health workers.

SEND CHEERS in the comments below to the UP Visayas community for lending its expertise to Iloilo province in the implementation of flood risk reduction and resilience.
