Kawit, Cavite’s annual Maytinis Festival Procession and Parade of Floats traditionally held on Christmas Eve and witnessed by thousands who flock to the streets of the historic Philippine Independence town is going virtual in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The St. Mary Magdalene Parish and Maytinis organizers announced on December 22, 2020, the decision to move the festival parade to the virtual world this year.

“Isang payak at kakaibang pagdiriwang ng Maytinis ang ating ipagdiriwang sa taong ito dahil sa banta ng pandemya. Gayunpaman, ang diwa ng pasko ng pagsilang ng Panginoon ay buhay sa bawat puso ng mananampalatayang Kawitenyo,” posted the church and festival social media.

The Maytinis procession and parade of floats bearing local youth and the country’s celebrities costumed as biblical characters depicting the Christmas story and the Salvation brought by Jesus Christ usually goes around the streets of Kawit and ends up just before the Christmas Midnight Mass on December 24 at the centuries-old St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church in Poblacion.

The 2020 Maytinis floats will instead be shown in a Virtual Maytinis of video footage of the dioramas displayed at each participating barangay. The Virtual Maytinis show is scheduled to be posted on the social media of Parroquia de Santa Maria Magdalena and Maytinis on December 24 at 8:00 PM.

The St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church, which was built in 1737, is one of the Philippine churches live streaming the Christmas Simbang Gabi.
