Bicol’s Cacao farming advocate Louise Mabulo named Young Asian to Watch
Cacao farming advocate Louise Emmanuelle Mabulo of Camarines Sur has been named one of the “30 and Under Young Asians to Watch” by The Straits Times in Singapore.
The 21-year-old Mabulo was honored as a Social Entrepreneur among the 30 go-getters and game-changers in Asia in The Straits Times list published on December 19, 2020.
The award-winning chef, entrepreneur, farmer, public speaker, and competitive archer was noted for The Cacao Project which she established to help farmers in San Fernando in the Philippines’ Bicol region, whose livelihoods were destroyed by Typhoon Nina in 2016, to get back on their feet.
The project provides participants with cacao seedlings, which are climate-resilient and lucrative, and trains them to farm responsibly and sustainably. More than 200 farmers have benefited from the project, which saw some 80,000 cacao trees planted, along with short-term crops such as bok choy and okra.
Earlier this year, Forbes Asia hailed Mabulo as a Filipino youth leader of The Cacao Project.
Mabulo was also named in the Gen T list of Filipinos shaping Asia’s future.
In 2019, Louise Mabulo won the United Nations Asia-Pacific Young Champions of the Earth prize.
